Great news…the Walk of the Black Country is back for 2012!

Following in the footsteps of last year’s successful event, Beacon Radio are thrilled to announce this year’s Walk of the Black Country will be on Sunday 10th June 2012, and best of all, it will finish at the racecourse!

Last year 3,500 people took part in the Walk and raised £103,000 for local charities – a fantastic achievement by everyone. It was an incredible day and we hope everyone will join us once again to help make a difference to the lives of local people across our region. Last year, the racecourses very own Ormila Dedi took part in the walk, and she will be doing the same this year!

Beacon presenters have once again teamed up with the University of Wolverhampton and all proceeds will go to Promise Dreams – with a percentage of funds going to the Dudley and Wolverhampton Mayoral charities.

Compton Hospice 80’s event takes us Back To The Future!

After months of planning and countless amounts of 80’s quotes, last Saturday saw Compton Hospice hold their 30th Anniversary event at the racecourse!

2012 sees Compton Hospice celebrating 30 years of providing the best care to patients and families throughout the West Midlands. The team at Compton decided that the Ringside venue would be the perfect room for the event, having previously worked together for the Hospices 2011 Charity ball.

The evening got started at 7.30pm with reception drinks and a chance to be photographed with the 80’s icon that is a Delorean, 1.21 jigawatts we hear you say! If that wasn’t enough, the catering team were able to create a drink that would have graced any 80’s themed party, the “Get Um Bongo’d” drink, with the main ingredient of course being Um Bongo. The food for the evening, expertly devised by Head Chef Chris “Hannibal” Gordon and his A-Team of catering staff, certainly helped all of the happy guests fill their tummies ready to get Footloose on the dancefloor!

It was mentioned on the evening that this was the first time that Michael Jackson, Adam Ant,  Freddie Mercury, Wonder Woman and Jimmy Saville had been in the same room at the same time since the 80’s, and we couldn't agree more!

To help raise money on the evening, one of our esteemed catering staff was auctioned off! The prize, a meal cooked at home by one of our Chefs from the racecourse (including washing up of course) went to a mystery bidder for £400! We are sure the bidder will have a great night, the catering team create some fantastic menus!

If all that great food and drink, great costumes and the Delorean were not enough to get people in the 80’s spirit, the casino and 80’s themed games certainly went down well!

More importantly, on the evening, the Hospice managed to raise a whopping £11,000, which of course will be put to good use.

We hope everyone who attended had a great evening, we certainly did!

February 2012

Its a packed February schedule at the racecourse with 8 more fixtures scheduled. Due to the disruptive weather we have been given an extra two fixtures, so its been keeping us very busy. The mixture of heavy snow on Saturday and fog on Monday have made it difficult for us due to safety concerns, but the estates team have been doing a fantastic job of keeping the track running.

Our live entertainment evenings start up again this month. February 11th sees Bootleg Abba return to the racecourse for another great evening of racing, fine dining and live music. Tickets are still available in Horizons and the Ringside but we do have limited availability, call us on 01902 390000 for further information.

The 18th February sees Compton Hospice celebrate 30 years of great service in the West Midlands. The evening, an 80's themed event, will see an 80's themed menu designed by our Head Chef Chris Gordon, 80's games and entertainment from pop star Jaki Graham. Tickets are very limited to speak to Compton ASAP to book tickets.

Have a great month, lets hope the weather gets better!

The Hospice will be holding their 30th Anniversary at the racecourse on Saturday February 18th 2012, celebrating 30 years of great work in the West Midlands. The event is the perfect opportunity to reminisce about how Compton has helped so many families over the past 30 years, and to also look forward to the future.

Head Chef Chris said “It’s been a great challenge to organise a menu that will befit of such a fantastic event. I was never very good at the Rubik’s cube in the 80’s, but this is one puzzle that the team and I have been able to solve”

With Um Bongo Fruit Juice and the Harvey Wallbanger available to wet the appetite of revellers, 80’s favourites the Quiche Lorraine a giant cheese and pineapple hedgehog will also be making an appearance. For dessert a fine selection of sweets are available, but what 80’s party wouldn’t be complete without abit of Angel Delight!

The evening begins at 7pm and will future live music from Kick up the Eighties and also a performance from 80’s Pop star Jaki Graham, who had a string of hits including Could it be I’m Falling In Love? Which reached No.5 in the British charts in March ’85 and ‘Round and Around’. There will also be a host of 80’s games for revellers to enjoy throughout the evening and retro cocktails to help the night go with a retro bang!

Sally Woods Community Fundraiser from Compton Hospice said “The room size and service that Wolverhampton Racecourse could offer were second to none. We are able to celebrate with so many of our friends that we have made over the years. The 80’s theme will help the day be even more memorable”.
